IDENTIFY ABUSE

Domestic violence occurs when one partner in a relationship uses a repeated pattern of abuse to assert power and control over the other.

Abuse is not selective and can affect individuals regardless of age, socioeconomic status, religion, gender, or sexual orientation and it can occur in various types of relationships, including marriages, cohabiting partnerships, dating relationships, or those involving shared children. Violent behaviors may manifest at any point in a relationship, but controlling, possessive, and other concerning behaviors often surface as the relationship progresses and becomes more serious.

Abuse and domestic violence can come in many forms and can be extremely harmful to individuals and families. It is important to be able to recognize the signs of abuse and domestic violence in order to take action and provide support to those who may be experiencing it. Here are some common signs and red flags to look out for:

  1. Emotional signs: Victims of abuse may exhibit signs of anxiety, depression, fear, or low self-esteem. They may also seem withdrawn, have sudden mood swings, or be overly apologetic.
  2. Controlling behavior: Abusers often seek to control their victims by monitoring their movements, restricting their access to finances, or isolating them from friends and family. Look out for signs of extreme jealousy or possessiveness.
  3. Verbal abuse: Pay attention to how individuals speak to each other. Verbal abuse can take the form of insults, threats, or manipulation. Victims may also seem to be on edge or constantly walking on eggshells around their abuser.
  4. Financial abuse: Abusers may control all financial aspects of a victim’s life, such as withholding money or preventing them from working. Look out for signs of financial instability or dependency on the abuser.
  5. Physical signs: Unexplained injuries such as bruises, cuts, or burns that cannot be easily explained or injuries that happen repeatedly. Keep an eye out for frequent visits to the hospital or doctor.

Remember, it is not always easy for victims to speak up about their experiences, so it is important to be patient and understanding.  If you relate to any of these topics or suspect that someone you know is experiencing abuse or domestic violence, it is important to approach the situation with sensitivity and seek support. Encourage them to ask for help from a trusted friend, family member, or a professional organization such as EmpowerHer.
